Product Review: AIM Sports Free Floated Handguard with Front Sight Extension Instructions
Posted by Andre on 9/22/2011

So we just got in a ton of new products from AIM Sports Inc. and while they are all VERY cool, so far NONE of them have included any type of installation instructions. To most people thats kind of a problem. So I figured Id do a little write up for you guys.

After receiving the item I could see that the packaging was very plain with nothing but the AIM Sports logo graphic in the corner and the part number on the end. Upon opening it, I found the quad rail very tightly wrapped with a plastic bag and unsealed. Included was the quad rail itself, a steel barrel nut, an aluminum knurled locking ring, an aluminum threaded locking ring, 2 steel retention pins, 3 steel set screws, and an allen wrench.

All in all Id say it only took me about 25 minutes from start to finish. Depending on what kind of weapon you have your results may vary

Here is an overview of the procedure:

You will need:
An AR15 combo tool like this one:

A hammer
A ~1/4 punch
Optional: Masking tape, AR15 receiver vise, Blue Locktite, Center punch, Strap wrench,

Step 1: Check to see the weapon is unloaded. Then, check again. Safety first.

Step 2: Remove the muzzle device from your AR15 using the AR15 combo wrench. Skip this step if yours doesnt have one.

Step 3: If yours has a standard, 2 piece, plastic handguard then now is a good time to remove it. If your handguard  is a free float tube than skip this step.

Step 4: Drift out the pins holding the front sight block in place. There will be two of them and they are directional so be sure to drift from the small side. Slide the FSB with the gas tube off of the barrel as well as the handguard retainer plate if your rifle has one.

Step 5: Using the combo wrench again, remove the existing barrel nut assembly. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. (If you have a free floated handguard already than you will probably need to remove it before you can remove the barrel nut. If yours is just an aluminum tube than it should be pretty simple to remove, if not consult your rifles manual. If still no luck than talk to the manufacturer.)

Step 6: Slide the knurled retaining ring onto the barrel followed by the steel barrel nut. Secure the barrel with the barrel nut and be sure to line the gas tube hole up precisely. This will determine the attitude of the rails later on. (Optional: Some choose to use blue Locktite on the threads, but I dont find it necessary. Your call.)

Step 7: Insert the two retention pins into the barrel nut holes at the 3 oclock and 9 oclock positions.

Step 8: Slide the aluminum threaded locking ring over the barrel and use the knurled locking ring to thread it into place. These threads are reversed so lefty tighty, righty loosey. This is the base that the quad rail itself will attach to so be sure it is solid before moving on. I recommend using similar torque to the barrel nut. (Optional: You may want to use some Blue Locktite here as well. Again, your call.)

Step 9: Insert the front sight block with gas tube into the slot cut out of the quad rail, from the bottom. You should be able to read the text right side up with the front sight post. Slide these over the barrel together while inserting the gas tube into the . It may take some wiggling.

Step 10: Line up the holes drilled into the side of the rails  with the FSB pin holes and drift the pins back into place. No need to worry about lining it up vertically as this was already done from the factory.

Step 11: Secure the quad rail to the threaded locking ring using the 3 steel set screws. They should be place at the 3, 6, and 9 oclock positions. (Optional: A little blue Locktite wouldnt hurt on these screws.)

Step 12: Check weapon for function. If satisfactory, GO SHOOTING!
